One Day in History
Portraits of young people who survived the massacre at the summer camp of Norwegian Labour Youths (AUF), on the island of Ut¿ya outside Oslo on July 22nd 2011.
I wear a mask. I wear a mask in school and among friends. I smile and am happy. I’m laughing and joking. Many times it’s straight from the heart. But often, too often it is forced out. Sometimes I wonder if my classmates have heard my real laughter?
Cathrine Gjerdingen Larsen (17) from Halden hid at the south tip of Ut¿ya. She swam away from the gunshots and was rescued by volunteers in a boat..
69 people were killed, and around 500 survived. Some were badly wounded and one year later many struggle to return to normal life.
